FINDING PEACE IN ARCHITECTURE

By Vince Garcia

Located north of the University of Houston is one of the most comforting buildings of the Space City.

The Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design is home to nationally recognized research programs and labs.

Founded in 1956 and one of the twelve academic colleges of the University of Houston, the building was named after the real estate developer Gerald D. Hines donated $7 million to the school.

Designed by Phillip Johnson, the structure was modeled after Clause Nicolas Ledoux’s School of Education.

The building uses eclectic and nascent pre-Revolutionary social ideals, making it one of the finest and most impressive buildings of the school.

Loany Covarrubias, a Coogar, attends the building daily and shared what her favorite things about the school are:

Students majoring in multiple disciples can visit as the building is home to the William R. Jenkins Architecture, Design, & Art Library.

The building’s open design and its areas of work allow visitors to interact with one another.

The building is located at 4200 Elgin St and operates Monay through Friday from 9AM-5PM.
